Do not call me a poet, O Mir, for I have

کب یہ تجھ ناتواں سے اٹھے گا

Roman Urdu:

Ishq ek Mir bhaari patthar hai

Kab yeh tujh na-tawaan se uthe ga

English Translation:

Love, O Mir, is a heavy stone;

How will someone as weak as you ever lift it?

Urdu:

پتہ پتہ بوٹا بوٹا حال ہمارا جانے ہے

جانے نہ جانے گل ہی نہ جانے باغ تو سارا جانے ہے

Patta patta boota boota haal hamara jaane hai

Jaane na jaane gul hi na jaane baagh to saara jaane hai

English Translation:

Every leaf and every bud knows my condition;

Only the rose remains unaware, while the entire garden knows.

Mir ke deeda abr ki tarah

Har taraf ashk baar hota hai

The eyes of Mir, just like a cloud,

Hoga kisi deewar ke saaye mein para Mir

Mir must be lying somewhere in the shadow of a wall;

دکھ کا دریا بہہ رہا ہے سینے میں

کوئی ساحل نہیں ملتا مجھے

Dukh ka darya beh raha hai seene mein

Koi saahil nahin milta mujhe

English Translation:

A river of sorrow is flowing within my chest,

And I cannot find any shore to rest upon.

Urdu:

دیکھ تو دل کی جاں سے اٹھتا ہے

یہ دھواں سا کہاں سے اٹھتا ہے

Dekh to dil ki jaan se uthta hai

Yeh dhuan sa kahaan se uthta hai

English Translation:

Look, it rises from the very depth of the heart;

Where is this smoke-like mist coming from?

رہا نہ گفتہ مرے دل میں داستاں میری

بیاں سے باہر ہے یہ ماجرائے جاں میری

Raha na gufta mere dil mein dastaan meri

Bayaan se baahir hai yeh maajra-e-jaan meri

English Translation:

My story remained unspoken within my heart;

This tale of my soul is beyond all expression.

Urdu:

کب تلک جی رکے خفا ہووے

آہ کیجیے کہ ٹک ہوا ہووے

Kab tilak jee ruke khafa howe

Aah kijiye ke tuk hawa howe

English Translation:

How long can the heart restrain itself and remain upset?

Let out a sigh so that the pain can vent a little.

دیدنی ہے شکستگی دل کی

اے بتِ سنگ دل ذرا آ دیکھ

Deedani hai shikastagi dil ki

Ae but-e-sang dil zara aa dekh

English Translation:

The broken state of my heart is worth seeing;

O stone-hearted beloved, come and take a look.

Dil hi to hai na sang-o-khisht, dard se bhar na aaye kyun

It is only a heart, not stone or brick, why shouldn’t it fill with pain?

I will weep a thousand times, why should anyone torment me?

Urdu:

یہ نہ تھی ہماری قسمت کہ وصالِ یار ہوتا

اگر اور جیتے رہتے یہی انتظار ہوتا

Yeh na thi hamari qismat ke wisaal-e-yaar hota

Agar aur jeete rehte yehi intezar hota

English Translation:

It was not in my destiny to unite with my beloved;

Had I lived any longer, it would have been the exact same wait.

Mohabbat mein nahin hai farq jeene aur marne ka

Usi ko dekh kar jeete hain jis kaafir pe dam nikle

English Translation:

There is no difference between living and dying in love;

I live by looking at the very beloved for whom my breath departs.

Urdu:

عشق پر زور نہیں ہے یہ وہ آتش غالبؔ

کہ لگائے نہ لگے اور بجھائے نہ بجھے

Roman Urdu:

Ishq par zor nahin hai yeh woh aatish Ghalib

Ke lagaye na lage aur bujhaye na bujhe

English Translation:

Love cannot be forced, O Ghalib, it is that kind of fire

Which cannot be lit intentionally and cannot be extinguished when it burns.

Urdu:

وہ آئے گھر میں ہمارے خدا کی قدرت ہے

کبھی ہم ان کو کبھی اپنے گھر کو دیکھتے ہیں

Woh aaye ghar mein hamare khuda ki qudrat hai

Kabhi hum un ko kabhi apne ghar ko dekhte hain

ہوئی تاخیر تو کچھ باعثِ تاخیر بھی تھا

Hui takheer to kuch baais-e-takheer bhi tha

Aap aate the magar koi anaad aata tha

If there was a delay, there was surely a reason for that delay;

You intended to come, but some obstacle stood in the way.

غمِ ہستی کا اسدؔ کس سے ہو جز مرگ علاج

شمعِ ہر رنگ میں جلتی ہے سحر ہونے تک

Gham-e-hasti ka Asad kis se ho juz marg ilaaj

Shama har rang mein jalti hai sehar hone tak

English Translation:

What cure is there for the sorrow of existence, O Asad, except death?

The candle must burn in every hue until the dawn arrives.

دردِ دل لکھوں کب تک، جاؤں ان کو دکھلاؤں

انگلیاں فگار اپنی، خامہ خوں چکاں اپنا

The unfaithfulness belongs to you, yet I am the one who feels ashamed;

اے دردِ عشق! ہے گہرِ آبدار تو

نا محرموں میں دیکھ نہ ہو آشکار تو

Roman Urdu:

Ae dard-e-ishq! hai gohar-e-aabdaar tu

Na-mahramoon mein dekh na ho aashkar tu

English Translation:

O pain of love! You are a lustrous pearl;

Take care that you do not reveal yourself among strangers.

Urdu:

تمنا دردِ دل کی ہو تو کر خدمت فقیروں کی

نہیں ملتا یہ گوہر بادشاہوں کے خزینوں میں

Tamanna dard-e-dil ki ho to kar khidmat faqiroon ki

Nahin milta yeh gohar baadshahoon ke khazinoon mein

If you desire a feeling heart, then serve the dervishes;

I am weary of the gatherings of this world, O Lord;

ستاروں سے آگے جہاں اور بھی ہیں

ابھی عشق کے امتحاں اور بھی ہیں

Roman Urdu:

Sitaroon se aage jahaan aur bhi hain

Abhi ishq ke imtehaan aur bhi hain

English Translation:

There are worlds beyond the stars;

There are still more trials remaining for love to face.

Urdu:

خودی کو کر بلند اتنا کہ ہر تقدیر سے پہلے

خدا بندے سے خود پوچھے بتا تیری رضا کیا ہے

Roman Urdu:

Khudi ko kar buland itna ke har taqdeer se pehle

Khuda bande se khud poochhe bata teri raza kya hai

English Translation:

Elevate your selfhood to such heights that before writing any destiny,

God Himself asks His servant, “Tell Me, what is your desire?”

Urdu:

کبھی چھوڑی ہوئی منزل بھی یاد آتی ہے راہی کو

کھٹک سی ہے جو سینے میں غمِ منزل کی رہ جاتی ہے

Roman Urdu:

Kabhi chhori hui manzil bhi yaad aati hai raahi ko

Khatak si hai jo seene mein gham-e-manzil ki reh jaati hai

English Translation:

Sometimes a traveler remembers the destination they once left behind;

There is a slight ache remaining in the chest from the sorrow of that destination.

Urdu:

عشق کی ایک جست نے طے کر دیا قصہ تمام

اس زمیں و آسماں کو بے کراں سمجھا تھا میں

Roman Urdu:

Ishq ki ek just ne tay kar diya qissa tamaam

Is zameen-o-aasman ko be-karaan samjha tha main

English Translation:

A single leap of love brought the entire story to an end;

And here I was, considering this earth and sky to be boundless.

ترے عشق کی انتہا چاہتا ہوں

مری سادگی دیکھ کیا چاہتا ہوں

Roman Urdu:

Tere ishq ki inteha chahta hoon

Meri saadgi dekh kya chahta hoon

English Translation:

I desire to reach the extreme limit of your love;

Look at my utter simplicity and what it is that I wish for.

Urdu:

نشہ پلا کے گرانا تو سب کو آتا ہے

مزا تو جب ہے کہ گرتوں کو تھام لے ساقی

Roman Urdu:

Nasha pila ke girana to sab ko aata hai

Maza to jab hai ke girtoon ko thaam le saaqi

English Translation:

Anyone can make someone stumble by intoxicating them;

The true pleasure lies when the cupbearer holds and saves those who fall.

Urdu:

پریشاں ہو کے میری خاک آخر دل نہ بن جائے

جو مشکل اب ہے یا رب پھر وہی مشکل نہ بن جائے

Roman Urdu:

Pareshan ho ke meri khaak aakhir dil na ban jaaye

Jo mushkil ab hai ya Rabb phir wohi mushkil na ban jaaye

Lest my scattered dust should gather to become a troubled heart again,

O Lord, let the current trial not turn into the exact same problem once more.

Urdu:

داستانِ غمِ دل اُن کو سنائی نہ گئی

بات بگڑی تھی کچھ ایسی کہ بنائی نہ گئی

Roman Urdu:

Dastaan-e-gham-e-dil un ko sunayi na gayi

Baat bigri thi kuch aisi ke banayi na gayi

English Translation:

The tale of my broken heart could not be told to them;

Things had fallen apart in such a way that they could not be mended.

Urdu:

سب کو ہم بھول گئے جوشِ جنوں میں لیکن

ایک تیری یاد تھی ایسی جو بھلائی نہ گئی

Roman Urdu:

Sab ko hum bhool gaye josh-e-junoon mein lekin

Ek teri yaad thi aisi jo bhulayi na gayi

English Translation:

I forgot everyone else in the intensity of my passion, but

Your memory was the only one that could never be forgotten.

Urdu:

مدت ہوئی اک حادثۂ عشق کو لیکن

اب تک ہے تیرے دل کی دھڑکنے کی صدا یاد

Roman Urdu:

Muddat hui ik haadsa-e-ishq ko lekin

Ab tak hai tere dil ki dharakne ki sada yaad

English Translation:

A long time has passed since that tragic accident of love,

Yet the sound of your heartbeat is still remembered to this day.

Urdu:

تھا کھیل سا پہلے عشق لیکن جو کھلیں آنکھیں

ڈوبا ہوا رگ رگ میں وہ تیرِ نظر دیکھا

Roman Urdu:

Tha khel sa pehle ishq lekin jo khulein aankhein

Dooba hua rag rag mein woh teer-e-nazar dekha

English Translation:

At first, love seemed like a mere game, but when my eyes truly opened,

I found that piercing arrow of your gaze deeply embedded in every vein.

Urdu:

میں راہیںِ درد سہی مگر

مجھے اور کیا چاہیے جگرؔ، غمِ یار ہے میرا شیفتہ

Roman Urdu:

Main raheen-e-dard sahi magar

Mujhe aur kya chahiye Jigar, gham-e-yaar hai mera shefta

English Translation:

I may be a traveler on the path of pain, but

What else do I need, O Jigar? The sorrow of the beloved is my true adoration.

Urdu:

اس اشک سے کیا دل کا صحرا سیراب ہوگا

جو شوق سے نکلا وہ آنسو دریا بن گیا

Roman Urdu:

Is ashk se kya dil ka sehra seeraab hoga

Jo shauq se nikla woh aansu danya ban gaya

English Translation:

How can a single tear satisfy the desert of the heart?

Yet, the tear that flowed with deep passion turned into an entire river.

Urdu:

اے عشق! شاد باش کہ تنہا ہمیں رہے

ایمانِ کفر اور نہ دنیا و دیں رہے

Roman Urdu:

Ae ishq! shaad baash ke tanha humein rahe

Emaan-e-kufr aur na duniya-o-deen rahe

English Translation:

O love! Be glad that I am left entirely alone;

Neither the faith of infidelity nor the world and religion remain.

Urdu:

رونے کی حسرتیں ہیں جب آنسو نہیں رہے

اس عشق کی تلافیِ مافات دیکھنا

Roman Urdu:

Rone ki hasratein hain jab aansu nahin rahe

Is ishq ki talaafi-e-maafaat dekhna

English Translation:

The desire to weep remains even when the tears have run dry;

Behold the strange compensation for losses in this game of love.

دردِ غمِ فراق کے یہ سخت مرحلے

Dard-e-gham-e-firaaq ke yeh sakht marhale

تم اس دلِ وحشی کی وفاؤں پہ جانا

Tum is dil-e-wahshi ki wafaoon pe jaana

Yeh ishq hai aazaad, wafa ka nahin paaband

Do not judge things by the loyalties of this wild heart;

This love is entirely free, it is not bound by any conventional fidelity.

No one ever manages to come and reach me anymore;

This indicates that a massive catastrophe has occurred within me.

میں اب بھی خود سے ہوں جواب طلب

وہ مجھے بے سوال چھوڑ گیا

Main ab bhi khud se hoon jawab talab

Woh mujhe be-sawaal chhor gaya

I am still searching for explanations within my own self,

While he left me completely stranded without asking a single question.

ہم نے دریا کو بھی روتا دیکھا ہے

جب کسی نے کنارہ چھوڑا

Hum ne darya ko bhi rota dekha hai

Jab kisi ne kinara chhora

English Translation:

I have witnessed even the vast river weeping in sorrow,

The moment someone decided to abandon its long-standing shore.

Urdu:

یہ غم کیا دل کی عادت ہے؟ نہیں تو

کسی سے کچھ شکایت ہے؟ نہیں تو

Roman Urdu:

Yeh gham kya dil ki aadat hai? Nahin to

Kisi se kuch shikayat hai? Nahin to

English Translation:

Is this sorrow merely a regular habit of the heart? No, it isn’t.

Do I have some sort of grievance against anyone? No, I don’t.

Urdu:

دل تمنا سے ڈر گیا جانم

سارا نشہ اتر گیا جانم

Roman Urdu:

Dil tamanna se dar gaya jaanam

Saara nasha utar gaya jaanam

English Translation:

The heart has grown terrified of making any new desires, my dear;

The entire intoxication of passion has completely faded away, my love.

کوئی ایسا ہو جو مجھ میں آئے اور آنکھیں بھی نہ کھلیں

مجھے نیند نہیں آتی یا رب لیکن خواب ضرور آتے ہیں

Koi aisa ho jo mujh mein aaye aur aankhein bhi na khulein

Mujshe neend nahin aati ya Rabb lekin khwab zaroor aate hain

Let there be someone who enters my essence without even waking my eyes;

I am unable to sleep, O Lord, yet dreams certainly keep visiting me.

رہی امید تو برباد ہو جاؤں گا میں

جائیے تو پھر مجھے سچ مچ بھلا دیجیے

Roman Urdu:

Rahi umeed to barbaad ho jaoon ga mein

Jaiye to phir mujhe sach much bhula dejiye

English Translation:

If any hope remains inside me, I will be utterly ruined;

So if you are leaving, then truly and completely forget me.

جیسے ہو عمر بھر کا اثاثہ غریب کا

کچھ اس طرح سے میں نے سنبھالے تمہارے خط

Roman Urdu:

Jaise ho umr bhar ka asaasa ghareeb ka

Kuch is tarah se main ne sambhale tumhare khat

English Translation:

Just like the lifelong savings of a poor man,

In that exact manner, I have treasured and preserved your letters.

زندگی اب کے مرا نام نہ شامل کرنا

گر یہ طے ہے کہ یہی کھیل دوبارہ ہوگا

Zindagi ab ke mera naam na shamil karna

Gar yeh tay hai ke yehi khel dobara hoga

O life, do not include my name this time around,

If it is already decided that the exact same game will be played again.

ہم سے زندگی کی حقیقت نہ پوچھو وسیؔ

بہت پُرخلوص لوگ تھے جو تنہا کر گئے

Hum se zindagi ki haqeeqat na poochho Wasi

Bohat pur-khuloos log the jo tanha kar gaye

Do not ask me about the bitter reality of life, O Wasi;

دل کو کس بات کی سزا ہے وسیؔ

موت تک کیوں اسے دھڑکنا ہے

Dil ko kis baat ki zaa hai Wasi

Maut tak kyun ise dharakna hai

For what crime is this heart being punished, O Wasi?

Why must it continue to beat all the way until death?

تمہیں معلوم ہے جاناں کہ تم بھی ایک قاتل ہو

میرے اندر کا ایک ہنستا ہوا انسان تم نے مار ڈالا ہے

Tumhein maaloom hai jaanan ke tum bhi ek qaatil ho

Mere andar ka ek hansta hua insaan tum ne maar dala hai

English Translation:

Do you know, my beloved, that you too are a murderer?

You have completely killed the cheerful, laughing human being inside of me.

اندھیری رات میں رہتے تو کتنا اچھا تھا

ہم اپنی ذات میں رہتے تو کتنا اچھا تھا

Andheeri raat mein rehte to kitna acchha tha

Hum apni zaat mein rehte to kitna acchha tha

How wonderful it would have been had we remained in the dark night;

How wonderful it would have been had we remained confined within our own selves.

یہ جو چہرے سے تمہیں لگتے ہیں بیمار سے ہم

خوب روئے ہیں لپٹ کر دروازوں سے ہم

Roman Urdu:

Yeh jo chehre se tumhein lagte hain bimaar se hum

Khoob roye hain lipat kar darwazoon se hum

We, who appear so pale and sickly to you from our faces,

Have wept bitterly while clinging to the closed doors in our solitude.

کون کہتا ہے ملاقات مری آج کی ہے

Kaon kehta hai mulaqaat meri aaj ki hai

Tu meri rooh ke andar hai kai sadiyoon se

Who says that our connection is a matter of just today?

You have existed deep inside my soul for many centuries.

اپنے احساس سے چھو کر مجھے صندل کر دو

میں کہ صدیوں سے ادھورا ہوں مکمل کر دو

Apne ehsaas se chhoo kar mujhe sandal kar do

Main ke sadiyoon se adhoora hoon mukammal kar do
