کتنا تنہا ہوگا چاند
Roman Urdu:
Itne ghane baadal ke peechhe
Kitna tanha hoga chaand
English Translation:
Behind such thick and dense clouds,
How lonely the moon must be.
Urdu:
ہم تو سمجھے تھے کہ اک زخم ہے بھر جائے گا
کیا خبر تھی کہ رگِ جاں میں اتر جائے گا
Roman Urdu:
Hum to samjhe the ke ik zakhm hai bhar jaaye ga
Kya khabar thi ke rag-e-jaan mein utar jaaye ga
English Translation:
I thought it was merely a wound that would heal over time;
Little did I know it would sink deep into my very life-vein.
Urdu:
چلنے کا حوصلہ نہیں، رکنا محال کر دیا
عشق کے اس سفر نے تو مجھ کو نڈھال کر دیا
Roman Urdu:
Chalne ka hausla nahin, rukna muhaal kar diya
Ishq ke is safar ne to mujh ko nidhaal kar diya
English Translation:
I have no courage left to walk, yet stopping has been made impossible;
This journey of love has left me completely exhausted and spent.
Urdu:
کیسے کہ دوں کہ مجھے چھوڑ دیا ہے اس نے
بات تو سچ ہے مگر بات ہے رسوائی کی
Roman Urdu:
Kaise keh doon ke mujhe chhor diya hai us ne
Baat to sach hai magar baat hai ruswai ki
English Translation:
How can I openly admit that he has abandoned me?
Though it is the truth, it is a matter of utter disgrace.
Urdu:
مری طلب تھا ایک شخص وہ جو نہیں ملا تو پھر
ہاتھ دعا سے یوں گرا، بھول گیا سوال بھی
Roman Urdu:
Meri talab tha ek shakhs woh jo nahin mila to phir
Haath dua se yoon gira, bhool gya sawaal bhi
English Translation:
My only desire was a specific person, and when I could not have him,
My hands fell from prayer in such a way that I forgot the request itself.
Urdu:
وہ نہ آئے گا ہمیں معلوم تھا اس شام بھی
انتظار اس کا مگر کچھ سوچ کر کرتے رہے
Roman Urdu:
Woh na aaye ga hamein maaloom tha is shaam bhi
Intezar us ka magar kuch soch kar karte rahe
English Translation:
I knew very well that he would not show up that evening either;
Yet, driven by some lingering thought, I kept on waiting for him.
Urdu:
غمِ زندگی، غمِ بندگی، غمِ دوستاں
غمِ رفتگاں، غمِ ہجرتِ یاراں
Roman Urdu:
Gham-e-zindagi, gham-e-bandagi, gham-e-dostaan
Gham-e-raftagaan, gham-e-hijrat-e-yaaraan
English Translation:
The sorrow of life, the sorrow of devotion, the sorrow of friends;
The sorrow of those departed, and the sorrow of the migration of loved ones.
Urdu:
اک نام کیا لکھا ترا ساحل کی ریت پر
پھر عمر بھر ہوا سے میری دشمنی رہی
Roman Urdu:
Ik naam kya likha tera saahil ki ret par
Phir umr bhar hawa se meri dushmani rahi
English Translation:
The moment I wrote your name upon the sand of the seashore,
The wind became my sworn enemy for the rest of my life.
Urdu:
کچھ تو تیرے موسم ہی مجھے راس کم آئے
اور کچھ میری مٹی میں بغاوت بھی بہت تھی
Roman Urdu:
Kuch to tere mausam hi mujhe raas kam aaye
Aur kuch meri mitti mein baghaawat bhi bohat thi
English Translation:
Partly, your changing seasons did not suit my temperament;
And partly, there was a great deal of rebellion inherent in my very clay.
Urdu:
اپنے قاتل کی ذہانت سے پریشاں ہوں میں
روز ایک موت نئے طرز کی ایجاد کرے
Roman Urdu:
Apne qaatil ki zahanaat se pareshan hoon mein
Roz ek maut naye tarz ki eejaad kare
English Translation:
I am deeply troubled by the sheer brilliance of my killer;
Every single day, they invent a brand new way for me to die.
Wasi Shah (وسی شاہ)
Urdu:
جب رات کی ناگن ڈستی ہے
نس نس میں زہر اترتا ہے — تب یاد بہت تم آتے ہو
Roman Urdu:
Jab raat ki naagin dasti hai
Nas nas mein zehar utarta hai — tab yaad bohat tum aate ho
English Translation:
When the serpent of the night bites and its venom flows through every vein,
It is at that precise moment that I miss you intensely
Urdu:
هزاروں موسموں کی حکمرانی ہے میرے دل پر وسیؔ
میں جب بھی ہنستا ہوں تو آنکھیں بھیگ جاتی ہیں
Roman Urdu:
Hazaaron mausamon ki hukmraani hai mere dil par Wasi
Mein jab bhi hansta hoon to aankhein bheeg jaati hain
English Translation:
Thousands of emotional seasons hold sway over my heart, O Wasi;
Whenever I try to smile, my eyes unexpectedly well up with tears.

ورنہ کہنے کو تو سب لمحے تمہارے نام ہیں
میری آنکھیں بھی بہت بوجھل ہیں سونا ہے مجھے
Roman Urdu:
Warna kehne ko to sab lamhe tumhare naam hain
Meri aankhein bhi bohat bojhala hain sona hai mujhe
English Translation:
Otherwise, just for the sake of speaking, all my moments are dedicated to you;
But my eyes have grown heavily burdened now, and I must sleep.
Urdu:
ملے ہیں دوستو بیساکھیوں سے غم اتنے
میرے بدن کو سہاروں سے خوف آتا ہے
Roman Urdu:
Mile hain dosto baisakhiyoon se gham itne
Mere badan ko saharaon se khauf aata hai
English Translation:
My friends, I have received so much grief from relying on crutches
That my body has now developed a profound fear of any support.
Urdu:
اداسیوں سے وابستہ ہے یہ زندگی میری وسیؔ
خدا گواہ ہے کہ پھر بھی تجھے یاد کرتے ہیں
Roman Urdu:
Udasiyoon se waabasta hai yeh zindagi meri Wasi
Khuda gawah hai ke phir bhi tujhe yaad karte hain
English Translation:
My life is irrevocably intertwined with deep melancholy, O Wasi;
Yet God is my witness that I still continue to remember you.
Urdu:
میں لہو اپنی اناؤں کا بہا سکتا نہیں
تم نہیں آتی تو ملنے میں بھی آ سکتا نہیں
Roman Urdu:
Mein lahoo apni anaoon ka baha sakta nahin
Tum nahin aati to milne mein bhi aa sakta nahin
English Translation:
I cannot bring myself to sacrifice the lifeblood of my pride;
If you choose not to come, I too cannot come forward to meet you.
Urdu:
بعد مدت اسے دیکھا تو جسم و جاں کو یوں لگا
پیاسی زمیں پہ جیسے کوئی برس گیا بادل کی طرح
Roman Urdu:
Baad muddat use dekha to jism-o-jaan ko yoon laga
Pyaasi zameen pe jaise koi baras gaya baadal ki tarah
English Translation:
When I saw her after ages, my body and soul felt as though
A rain cloud had suddenly poured down upon a parched land.
Urdu:
تعلقات کے غاروں سے خوف آتا ہے
مجھے الفاظ کے پنجروں سے خوف آتا ہے
Roman Urdu:
Taaluqaat ke ghaaroon se khauf aata hai
Mujhe alfaaz ke pinjroon se khauf aata hai
English Translation:
I have grown deeply afraid of the dark caverns of human relationships;
I am terrified of the restrictive cages constructed by mere words.
Urdu:
کچھ اس لیے تو بے حال ہو گئے ہم لوگ
تمہاری یاد کا بے حد خیال رکھتے ہیں
Roman Urdu:
Kuch is liye to be-haal ho gaye hum log
Tumhari yaad ka be-had khayaal rakhte hain
English Translation:
This is precisely why we have ended up in such a wretched state—
Because we take such immense, obsessive care of your memories.
Urdu:
اس کو آدت ہے جڑیں کاٹتے رہنے کی وسیؔ
جو میری ذات کا محور ہے کئی صدیوں سے
Roman Urdu:
Us ko aadat hai jadein kaatate rehne ki Wasi
Jo meri zaat ka mihwar hai kai sadiyoon se
English Translation:
They possess an old habit of constantly severing my very roots, O Wasi—
The one who has been the center of my existence for centuries.
Faiz Ahmad Faiz (فیض احمد فیض)
Urdu:
دل ناامید تو نہیں ناکام ہی تو ہے
لمبی ہے غم کی شام مگر شام ہی تو ہے
Roman Urdu:
Dil na-umeed to nahin nakaam hi to hai
Lambi hai gham ki shaam magar shaam hi to hai
English Translation:
The heart is not entirely hopeless, it has merely failed for now;
The evening of sorrow is exceptionally long, yet it is just an evening after all.
Urdu:
کر رہا تھا غمِ جہاں کا حساب
آج تم یاد بے حساب آئے
Roman Urdu:
Kar raha tha gham-e-jahaan ka hisaab
Aaj tum yaad be-hisaab aaye
English Translation:
As I was busy calculating the various miseries of the world,
You suddenly crossed my mind in countless, immeasurable ways.
Urdu:
دونوں جہاں تیری محبت میں ہار کے
وہ جا رہا ہے کوئی شبِ غم گزار کے
Roman Urdu:
Donoon jahaan teri mohabbat mein haar ke
Woh ja raha hai koi shab-e-gham guzaar ke
English Translation:
Having lost both worlds in the pursuit of your love,
A lonely soul departs after spending yet another night of profound grief.
Urdu:
دنیا نے تیری یاد سے بیگانہ کر دیا
تجھ سے بھی دل فریب ہیں غمِ روزگار کے
Roman Urdu:
Duniya ne teri yaad se begaana kar diya
Tujh se bhi dil-fareb hain gham-e-rozgaar ke
English Translation:
The hardships of the world have made me estranged from your memory;
For the struggles of earning a livelihood are even more compelling than you.
Urdu:
شامِ فراق اب نہ پوچھ، آئی اور آ کے ٹل گئی
دل تھا کہ پھر بہل گیا، جاں تھی کہ پھر سنبھل گئی
Roman Urdu:
Shaam-e-firaaq ab na poochh, aayi aur aa ke tal gayi
Dil tha ke phir behal gaya, jaan thi ke phir sambhal gayi
English Translation:
Do not ask about the evening of separation now; it came and eventually passed;
The heart found a distraction again, and the soul managed to recover once more.
Urdu:
زندگی کیا کسی مفلس کی قبا ہے جس میں
ہر گھڑی درد کے پیوند لگے جاتے ہیں
Roman Urdu:
Zindagi kya kisi muflis ki qaba hai jis mein
Har ghari dard ke paiwand lage jaate hain
English Translation:
Is life nothing more than a poor man’s tattered cloak,
Upon which patches of pure pain are sewn at every passing moment?
Urdu:
آئے تو یوں کہ جیسے ہمیشہ تھے مہربان
بھولے تو یوں کہ گویا کبھی آشنا نہ تھے
Roman Urdu:
Aaye to yoon ka jaise hamesha the meharbaan
Bhoole to yoon ke goya kabhi aashna na any
English Translation:
When they came to me, they acted as if they had always been kind;
Yet when they forgot me, they did so as if we had never been acquainted.
Urdu:
تمہاری یاد کے جب زخم بھرنے لگتے ہیں
کسی بہانے تمہیں یاد کرنے لگتے ہیں
Roman Urdu:
Tumhari yaad ke jab zakhm bharne lagte hain
Kisi bahaane tumhein yaad karne lagte hain
English Translation:
Just when the deep wounds of your memory finally begin to heal,
I find some new excuse or another to start missing you all over again.
Urdu:
وہ بات سارے فسانے میں جس کا ذکر نہ تھا
وہ بات ان کو بہت ناگوار گزری ہے
Roman Urdu:
Woh baat saare fasaane mein jis ka zikr na tha
Woh baat un ko bohat na-gawaar guzri hai
English Translation:
The single detail that was never even mentioned in the entire story
Turned out to be the very thing that they found deeply offensive.
Urdu:
متاعِ لوح و قلم چھن گئی تو کیا غم ہے
کہ خونِ دل میں ڈبو لی ہیں انگلیاں میں نے
Roman Urdu:
Mataa-e-lauh-o-qalam chhin gayi to kya gham hai
Ke khoon-e-dil mein dibo li hain ungliyan main ne
English Translation:
What does it matter if my paper and pen have been snatched away?
For I have dipped my bare fingers into the very lifeblood of my heart to write.
Ahmad Faraz (احمد فراز)
Urdu:
روگ ایسے بھی غمِ یار سے لگ جاتے ہیں
در سے اٹھتے ہیں تو دیوار سے لگ جاتے ہیں
Roman Urdu:
Rog aise bhi gham-e-yaar se lag jaate hain
Dar se uthte hain to deewar se lag jaate hain
English Translation:
Such afflictions are contracted from the sorrow of the beloved
That when people rise from the doorway, they collapse helplessly against the wall.
Urdu:
رنجش ہی سہی دل ہی دکھانے کے لیے آ
آ پھر سے مجھے چھوڑ کے جانے کے لیے آ
Roman Urdu:
Ranjish hi sahi dil hi dukhaane ke liye aa
Aa phir se mujhe chhor ke jaane ke liye aa
English Translation:
Even if it is out of resentment, come back if only to break my heart;
Come, even if it is just to abandon me and walk away once more.
Urdu:
اب اپنا اختیار ہے چاہے جہاں چلیں
رہبر سے اپنی راہ جدا کر چکے ہیں ہم
Roman Urdu:
Ab apna ikhtiyaar hai chahe jahaan chalein
Rehbar se apni raah juda kar chuke hain hum
English Translation:
Now the choice is entirely mine to wander wherever I please;
For I have finally separated my path from that of the guide.
Urdu:
ایسا ہے کہ سب خواب مسلسل نہیں ہوتے
جو آج تو ہوتے ہیں مگر کل نہیں ہوتے
Roman Urdu:
Aisa hai ke sab khwab musalsal nahin hote
Jo aaj to hote hain magar kal nahin hote
English Translation:
The reality is that not all dreams are continuous;
Some exist vividly today but vanish completely by tomorrow.
Urdu:
چپ چاپ اپنی آگ میں جلتے رہو فرازؔ
دنیا تو عرضِ حال سے بے آبرو کرے
Roman Urdu:
Chup chaap apni aag mein jalte rahoo Faraz
Duniya to arz-e-haal se be-aabroo kare
English Translation:
Keep burning silently within your own internal fire, O Faraz;
For the world will only humiliate you if you express your plight.
Urdu:
بہت غم دے چکی دنیا، سکوں اب تم ہی دو
چلو یہ شرط بھی تم جیت جاؤ، پاس آ جاؤ
Roman Urdu:
Bohat gham de chuki duniya, sukoon ab tum hi do
Chalo yeh shart bhi tum jeet jao, paas aa jao
English Translation:
The world has given me enough grief; now let peace come from you alone;
Fine, let us say you have won this wager too—just come close to me.
Urdu:
اس سے پہلے کہ بے وفا ہو جائیں
کیوں نہ اے دوست ہم جدا ہو جائیں
Roman Urdu:
Is se pehle ke be-wafa ho jaayein
Kyun na ae dost hum juda ho jaayein
English Translation:
Before either of us turns unfaithful to the other,
Why shouldn’t we, my dear friend, part ways right now?
Urdu:
شوقِ ترا اگر نہ رہے تو کچھ بھی نہیں
دنیا کی رونقیں بھی پھر اچھی نہیں لگتیں
Roman Urdu:
Shauq tera agar na rahe to kuch bhi nahin
Duniya ki raunaqein bhi phir acchhi nahin lagteen
English Translation:
If the intense passion for you ceases to exist, then nothing remains;
Even the grand festivities of the world fail to please the heart after that.
Urdu:
کرو کج جبیں پہ سرِ کفن مرے قاتلوں کو گماں نہ ہو
کہ غرورِ عشق کا بانکپن پسِ مرگ ہم نے بھلا دیا
Roman Urdu:
Karo kaj jabeen pe sar-e-kafan mere qaatiloon ko gumaan na ho
Ke ghuroor-e-ishq ka baankpan pas-e-marg hum ne bhula diya
English Translation:
Tilt the shroud slightly over my forehead so my killers do not assume
That I have forgotten the elegant pride of love even after my death.
Urdu:
جدائیاں تو مقدر ہیں پھر بھی جانِ سفر
کچھ اور دور ذرا ساتھ چل کے دیکھتے ہیں
Roman Urdu:
Judaiyan to muqaddar hain phir bhi jaan-e-safar
Kuch aur door zara saath chal ke dekhte hain
English Translation:
Separations are ultimately our destiny, yet O companion of the journey,
Let us walk together just a little further and see what happens.

ہر وقت کا ہنسنا تجھے برباد نہ کر دے
تنہائی کے لمحوں میں کبھی رو بھی لیا کر

Har waqt ka hansna tujhe barbaad na kar de
Tanhai ke lamhoon mein kabhi ro bhi liya kar
English Translation:
Lest this constant laughing at all times should utterly ruin you,
You ought to weep occasionally during your moments of utter loneliness.
Urdu:
دکھ ہی ایسا تھا کہ محسنؔ ہوا گم سم ورنہ
غم چھپا کر اسے ہنستے ہوئے اکثر دیکھا
Roman Urdu:
Dukh hi aisa tha ke Mohsin hua gum-sum warna
Gham chhupa kar use hanste hue aksar dekha
English Translation:
The grief was so profound that Mohsin fell completely silent; otherwise,
He was frequently seen laughing while hiding his deep sorrows.
Urdu:
کل تھکے ہارے پرندوں نے نصیحت کی مجھے
شام ڈھل جائے تو محسنؔ تم بھی گھر جایا کرو
Roman Urdu:
Kal thake haare parindoon ne naseehat ki mujhe
Shaam dhal jaaye to Mohsin tum bhi ghar jaya karo
English Translation:
Yesterday, the exhausted and weary birds gave me a piece of advice:
“Once the evening sets in, Mohsin, you too should return home.”
Urdu:
ہجوم شہر سے ہٹ کر، حدودِ شہر کے بعد
وہ مسکرا کے ملے بھی تو کون دیکھتا ہے
Roman Urdu:
Hajooma-e-shehar se hat kar, hudood-e-shehar ke baad
Woh muskura ke mile bhi to kaun dekhta hai
English Translation:
Far away from the city crowds, past the very boundaries of the town,
Even if she meets me with a smile, who is there left to witness it?
Urdu:
جس آنکھ میں کوئی چہرہ نہ کوئی عکس طلب
وہ آنکھ جل کے بجھے بھی تو کون دیکھتا ہے
Roman Urdu:
Jis aankh mein koi chehra na koi aks-e-talab
Woh aankh jal ke bujhe bhi to kaun dekhta hai
English Translation:
An eye that harbors no familiar face and holds no reflection of desire—
Even if that eye burns out and fades away, who is there to care?
Urdu:
وفا کی کون سی منزل پہ اس نے چھوڑا تھا
کہ وہ تو یاد ہمیں بھول کر بھی آتا ہے
Roman Urdu:
Wafa ki kaun si manzil pe us ne chhora tha
Ke woh to yaad hamein bhool kar bhi aata hai
English Translation:
At what particular stage of loyalty did he abandon me?
For he still returns to my thoughts, even if only by mistake.
Urdu:
کوئی نئی چوٹ پھر سے کھاؤ! اداس لوگو
کہاں تھا کس نے، کہ مسکراؤ
Roman Urdu:
Koi nayi chot phir se khao! udaas logo
Kahaan tha kis ne, ke muskurao!
English Translation:
Go ahead and suffer some brand new emotional wound, O melancholic people!
For who could have ever told you to put on a fake smile?
Urdu:
آگ میں کودا بھی تو کیا ملا مجھے محسنؔ
اسے بچا نہ سکا اور اپنی جان سے بھی گیا
Roman Urdu:
Aag mein kooda bhi to kya mila mujhe Mohsin
Use bacha na saka aur apni jaan se bhi gaya
English Translation:
What did I possibly gain by leaping into the raging fire, O Mohsin?
I failed to save her, and I ended up losing my own life in the process.
Urdu:
کیوں تیرے درد کو دیں تہمتِ ویرانیِ دل
زلزلوں میں تو بھرے شہر اجڑ جاتے ہیں
Roman Urdu:
Kyun tere dard ko dein tohmat-e-weeraani-e-dil
Zalzaloon mein to bhare shehar ujad jaate hain
English Translation:
Why should we blame your painful absence for the desolation of my heart?
After all, even fully populated cities are laid to waste during earthquakes.
Urdu:
اک اجنبی جھونکے نے جب پوچھا مرے غم کا سبب
صحرا کی تپتی ریت پر میں نے لکھا — آوارگی
Roman Urdu:
Ik ajnabi jhoonke ne jab poochha mere gham ka sabab
Sehra ki tapti ret par mein ne likha — aawaargi
English Translation:
When a strange, passing gust of wind inquired about the cause of my grief,
Upon the scorching sand of the desert, I simply traced the word: Vagrancy.
