کیسے کہوں کہ مجھے چھوڑ دیا ہے اس نے

بات تو سچ ہے مگر بات ہے رسوائی کی

Roman Urdu:

Kaise kahoon ke mujhe chhor diya hai us ne

Baat to sach hai magar baat hai ruswai ki

English Translation:

How can I openly admit that he has abandoned me?

Though it is the truth, it is a matter of utter disgrace.

Urdu:

اب تو اس راہ سے وہ شخص گزرتا بھی نہیں

اب کس امید پہ دروازے سے جھانکے کوئی

Roman Urdu:

Ab to us raah se woh shakhs guzarta bhi nahin

Ab kis umeed pe darwaze se jhaanke koi

English Translation:

Now that person does not even pass by this path anymore;

Upon what hope should anyone now peer through the doorway?

Urdu:

وہ کہیں بھی گیا، لوٹا تو میرے پاس آیا

بس یہی بات ہے اچھی میرے ہرجائی کی

Roman Urdu:

Woh kahin bhi gaya, lauta to mere paas aaya

Bas yehi baat hai acchhi mere harjai ki

English Translation:

Wherever he wandered, he ultimately returned to me in the end;

This is the only saving grace of my unfaithful lover.

Urdu:

تجھ سے بچھڑنے کے بعد جانا کہ تو کیا تھا

پہلے کبھی اندازہ نہ تھا تیری کمی کا

Roman Urdu:

Tujh se bichhadne ke baad jaana ke tu kya tha

Pehle kabhi andaza na tha teri kami ka

English Translation:

Only after separating from you did I realize what you truly meant to me;

Never before had I estimated the profound void your absence would leave.

Urdu:

ہم تو سمجھے تھے کہ اک زخم ہے بھر جائے گا

کیا خبر تھی کہ رگِ جاں میں اتر جائے گا

Roman Urdu:

Hum to samjhe the ke ik zakhm hai bhar jaaye ga

Kya khabar thi ke rag-e-jaan mein utar jaaye ga

English Translation:

I thought it was merely a wound that would heal over time;

Little did I know it would sink deep into my very life-vein.

Urdu:

وہ نہیں آئے گا، معلوم تھا اس شام بھی

انتظار اس کا مگر کچھ سوچ کر کرتے رہے

Roman Urdu:

Woh nahin aaye ga, maaloom tha is shaam bhi

Intezar us ka magar kuch soch kar karte rahe

English Translation:

I knew very well that he would not show up that evening either;

Yet, driven by some lingering thought, I kept on waiting for him.

Urdu:

اک نام کیا لکھا ترا ساحل کی ریت پر

پھر عمر بھر ہوا سے میری دشمنی رہی

Roman Urdu:

Ik naam kya likha tera saahil ki ret par

Phir umr bhar hawa se meri dushmani rahi

English Translation:

The moment I wrote your name upon the sand of the seashore,

The wind became my sworn enemy for the rest of my life.

Urdu:

میری طلب تھا ایک شخص، وہ جو نہیں ملا تو پھر

ہاتھ دعا سے یوں گرا، بھول گیا سوال بھی

Roman Urdu:

Meri talab tha ek shakhs, woh jo nahin mila to phir

Haath dua se yoon gira, bhool gya sawaal bhi

English Translation:

My only desire was a specific person, and when I could not have him,

My hands fell from prayer in such a way that I forgot the request itself.

Urdu:

تو بدلتا ہے تو بے ساختہ میری آنکھیں

میرے ہاتھوں کی لکیروں سے الجھ جاتی ہیں

Roman Urdu:

Tu badalta hai to be-saakhta meri aankhein

Mere haathoon ki lakeeroon se ulajh jaati hain

English Translation:

Whenever you change your attitude, my eyes involuntarily

Begin to dispute and conflict with the lines of my own palms.

Urdu:

رخصت کرنے کے ادب نبھانے ہی تھے

بند آنکھوں سے اسے جاتا دیکھ لیا ہے

Roman Urdu:

Rukhsat karne ke adab nibhane hi تھے

Band aankhoon se use jaata dekh liya hai

English Translation:

The etiquettes of bidding farewell had to be maintained after all;

With closed eyes, I have witnessed him walking away.

جاتے جاتے آپ اتنا کام تو کیجیے

یاد کا سارا سرو ساماں جلاتے جائیے

Jaate jaate aap itna kaam to kejiye

Yaad ka saara sar-o-saamaan jalaate jaiye

English Translation:

As you leave, please do this one single task for me:

Keep burning and destroying all the belongings and triggers of your memory.

Urdu:

رہی امید تو برباد ہو جاؤں گا میں

جائیے تو پھر مجھے سچ مچ بھلا دیجیے

Roman Urdu:

Rahi umeed to barbaad ho jaoon ga mein

Jaiye to phir mujhe sach much bhula dejiye

English Translation:

If any hope remains inside me, I will be utterly ruined;

So if you are leaving, then truly and completely forget me.

Urdu:

کوئی آ کر مجھ تک نہیں پہنچتا

یہ مجھ میں کوئی بڑا حادثہ ہے

Roman Urdu:

Koi aa kar mujh tak nahin pahunchta

Yeh mujh mein koi bada haadsa hai

English Translation:

No one ever manages to come and reach me anymore;

This indicates that a massive catastrophe has occurred within me.

Urdu:

تم بھول گئے، ہم بھول گئے، یہ سلسلہ رہا

اب یاد ہے تو بس یہی کہ کچھ یاد نہیں رہا

Roman Urdu:

Tum bhool gaye, hum bhool gaye, yeh silsila raha

Ab yaad hai to bas yehi ke kuch yaad نہیں رہا

English Translation:

You forgot, and I forgot—this is how the cycle continued;

Now, if anything is remembered at all, it is just that nothing remains remembered.

Urdu:

مایوسی کام اپنا کر گئی ہے

تیرے ملنے کی حسرت مر گئی ہے

Roman Urdu:

Udasi kaam apna kar gayi hai

Tere milne ki hasrat mar gayi hai

English Translation:

The profound melancholy has successfully accomplished its task;

The deep longing to meet with you has finally died away.

Urdu:

تو بھی چپ ہے میں بھی چپ ہوں

یہ کیسی تنہائی ہے

Roman Urdu:

Tu bhi chup hai main bhi chup hoon

Yeh kaisi tanhai hai

English Translation:

You remain silent, and I remain silent as well;

What kind of strange loneliness is this that envelops us?

Urdu:

دل تمنا سے ڈر گیا جانم

سارا نشہ اتر گیا جانم

Roman Urdu:

Dil tamanna se dar gaya jaanam

Saara nasha utar gaya jaanam

English Translation:

The heart has grown terrified of making any new desires, my dear;

The entire intoxication of passion has completely faded away, my love.

Urdu:

میں اب بھی خود سے ہوں جواب طلب

وہ مجھے بے سوال چھوڑ گیا

Roman Urdu:

Main ab bhi khud se hoon jawab talab

Woh mujhe be-sawaal chhor gaya

English Translation:

I am still searching for explanations within my own self,

While he left me completely stranded without asking a single question.

Urdu:

اور تو کیا تھا بیچنے کے لیے

اپنی آنکھوں کے خواب بیچے ہیں

Roman Urdu:

Aur to kya تھا بیچنے کے لیے

Apni aankhoon ke khwab beche hain

English Translation:

What else did I possibly have left to sell in the market?

I have gone ahead and sold the very dreams of my eyes.

میر تقی میر (Mir Taqi Mir)

Urdu:

دیکھ تو دل کی جاں سے اٹھتا ہے

یہ دھواں سا کہاں سے اٹھتا ہے

Roman Urdu:

Dekh to dil ki jaan se uthta hai

Yeh dhuan sa kahaan se uthta hai

English Translation:

Look, it rises from the very depth of the heart;

Where is this smoke-like mist coming from?

Urdu:

پتہ پتہ بوٹا بوٹا حال ہمارا جانے ہے

جانے نہ جانے گل ہی نہ جانے باغ تو سارا جانے ہے

Roman Urdu:

Patta patta boota boota haal hamara jaane hai

Jaane na jaane gul hi na jaane baagh to saara jaane hai

English Translation:

Every leaf and every bud knows my condition;

Only the rose remains unaware, while the entire garden knows.

Urdu:

دیدنی ہے شکستگی دل کی

اے بتِ سنگ دل ذرا آ دیکھ

Roman Urdu:

Deedani hai shikastagi dil ki

Ae but-e-sang dil zara aa dekh

English Translation:

The broken state of my heart is worth seeing;

O stone-hearted beloved, come and take a look.

Urdu:

ہوگا کسی دیوار کے سائے میں پڑا میرؔ

کیا کام محبت سے اس آرام طلب کو

Roman Urdu:

Hoga kisi deewar ke saaye mein para Mir

Kya kaam mohabbat se is aaraam talab ko

English Translation:

Mir must be lying somewhere in the shadow of a wall;

What does this comfort-seeking man have to do with love?

Urdu:

عشق ایک میرؔ بھاری پتھر ہے

کب یہ تجھ ناتواں سے اٹھے گا

Roman Urdu:

Ishq ek Mir bhaari patthar hai

Kab yeh tujh na-tawaan se uthe ga

English Translation:

Love, O Mir, is a heavy stone;

How will someone as weak as you ever lift it?

Urdu:

کب تلک جی رکے خفا ہووے

آہ کیجیے کہ ٹک ہوا ہووے

Roman Urdu:

Kab tilak jee ruke khafa howe

Aah kijiye ke tuk hawa howe

English Translation:

How long can the heart restrain itself and remain upset?

Let out a sigh so that the pain can vent a little.

Urdu:

مجھ کو شاعر نہ کہو میرؔ کہ صاحب میں نے

درد و غم کتنے کیے جمع تو دیوان کیا

Roman Urdu:

Mujh ko shair na kaho Mir ke sahab main ne

Dard-o-gham kitne kiye jama to deewan kiya

English Translation:

Do not call me a poet, O Mir, for I have

Collected so much pain and sorrow just to create this anthology.

Urdu:

مر کے بھی چین نہ پایا تو کہاں جائیں ہم

یہ کوئی اور عذاب ہے عذابِ جاں سے سوا

Roman Urdu:

Mar ke bhi chain na paya to kahaan jaayein hum

Yeh koi aur azaab hai azaab-e-jaan se siwa

English Translation:

If I could not find peace even after death, where am I supposed to go?

This seems to be another torment altogether, far beyond the torment of life.

Urdu:

ہاتھ لگ جائے تو اس زخم کو مت چھیڑ کوئی

یہ وہ ناسور ہے جو تازہ ہی رہتا ہے ہمیشہ

Roman Urdu:

Haath lag jaaye to is zakhm ko mat chhed koi

Yeh woh naasoor hai jo taza hi rehta hai hamesha

English Translation:

If your hand happens to brush against it, let no one touch this wound;

This is an incurable ulcer that remains freshly raw forever.

Urdu:

آئے تو یوں کہ جیسے ہمیشہ تھے مہربان

بھولے تو یوں کہ گویا کبھی آشنا نہ تھے

Roman Urdu:

Aaye to yoon ka jaise hamesha the meharbaan

Bhoole to yoon ke goya kabhi aashna na the

English Translation:

When they came to me, they acted as if they had always been kind;

Yet when they forgot me, they did so as if we had never been acquainted.

Urdu:

دونوں جہاں تیری محبت میں ہار کے

وہ جا رہا ہے کوئی شبِ غم گزار کے

Roman Urdu:

Donoon jahaan teri mohabbat mein haar ke

Woh ja raha hai koi shab-e-gham guzaar ke

English Translation:

Having lost both worlds in the pursuit of your love,

A lonely soul departs after spending yet another night of profound grief.

Urdu:

دنیا نے تیری یاد سے بیگانہ کر دیا

تجھ سے بھی دل فریب ہیں غمِ روزگار کے

Roman Urdu:

Duniya ne teri یاد سے بیگانہ کر دیا

Tujh se bhi dil-fareb hain gham-e-rozgaar ke

English Translation:

The hardships of the world have made me estranged from your memory;

For the struggles of earning a livelihood are even more compelling than you.

Urdu:

کر رہا تھا غمِ جہاں کا حساب

آج تم یاد بے حساب آئے

Roman Urdu:

Kar raha tha gham-e-jahaan ka hisaab

Aaj tum yaad be-hisaab aaye

English Translation:

As I was busy calculating the various miseries of the world,

You suddenly crossed my mind in countless, immeasurable ways.

Urdu:

تمہاری یاد کے جب زخم بھرنے لگتے ہیں

کسی بہانے تمہیں یاد کرنے لگتے ہیں

Roman Urdu:

Tumhari yaad ke جب زخم بھرنے لگتے ہیں

Kisi bahaane tumhein yaad karne لگتے ہیں

English Translation:

Just when the deep wounds of your memory finally begin to heal,

I find some new excuse or another to start missing you all over again.

Urdu:

زندگی کیا کسی مفلس کی قبا ہے جس میں

ہر گھڑی درد کے پیوند لگے جاتے ہیں

Roman Urdu:

Zindagi kya kisi muflis ki qaba hai jis mein

Har ghari dard ke paiwand lage jaate hain

English Translation:

Is life nothing more than a poor man’s tattered cloak,

Upon which patches of pure pain are sewn at every passing moment?

Urdu:

شامِ فراق اب نہ پوچھ، آئی اور آ کے ٹل گئی

دل تھا کہ پھر بہل گیا، جاں تھی کہ پھر سنبھل گئی

Roman Urdu:

Shaam-e-firaaq ab na پوچھ، آئی اور آ کے ٹل گئی

Dil tha ke phir bahal gya, jaan thi ke phir sambhal gayi

English Translation:

Do not ask about the evening of separation now; it came and eventually passed;

The heart found a distraction again, and the soul managed to recover once more.

Urdu:

وہ بات سارے فسانے میں جس کا ذکر نہ تھا

وہ بات ان کو بہت ناگوار گزری ہے

Roman Urdu:

Woh baat saare fasaane mein jis ka zikr na تھا

Woh baat un ko bohat na-gawaar guzri hai

English Translation:

The single detail that was never even mentioned in the entire story

Turned out to be the very thing that they found deeply offensive.

Urdu:

دل ناامید تو نہیں ناکام ہی تو ہے

لمبی ہے غم کی شام مگر شام ہی تو ہے

Roman Urdu:

Dil na-umeed to nahin nakaam hi to hai

Lambi hai gham ki shaam magar shaam hi to hai

English Translation:

The heart is not entirely hopeless, it has merely failed for now;

The evening of sorrow is exceptionally long, yet it is just an evening after all.

Urdu:

متاعِ لوح و قلم چھن گئی تو کیا غم ہے

کہ خونِ دل میں ڈبو لی ہیں انگلیاں میں نے

Roman Urdu:

Mataa-e-lauh-o-qalam chhin gayi to kya gham hai

Ke khoon-e-dil mein dibo li hain ungliyan main ne

English Translation:

What does it matter if my paper and pen have been snatched away?

For I have dipped my bare fingers into the very lifeblood of my heart to write.

احمد فراز (Ahmad Faraz)

Urdu:

رنجش ہی سہی دل ہی دکھانے کے لیے آ

آ پھر سے مجھے چھوڑ کے جانے کے لیے آ

Roman Urdu:

Ranjish hi sahi dil hi dukhaane ke liye aa

Aa phir se mujhe chhor ke jaane ke liye aa

English Translation:

Even if it is out of resentment, come back if only to break my heart;

Come, even if it is just to abandon me and walk away once more.

Urdu:

سنا ہے لوگ اسے آنکھ بھر کے دیکھتے ہیں

سو اس کے شہر میں کچھ دن ٹھہر کے دیکھتے ہیں

Roman Urdu:

Suna hai log use aankh bhar ke dekhte hain

So us ke shehar mein kuch din thehar ke dekhte hain

English Translation:

I have heard that people stare at her with an admiring gaze;

Therefore, let me go and stay in her city for a few days to see for myself.

Urdu:

آنکھ سے دور نہ ہو دل سے اتر جائے گا

وقّت کا کیا ہے گزرتا ہے گزر جائے گا

Roman Urdu:

Aankh se door na ho dil se utar jaayega

Waqt ka kya hai guzarta hai guzar jaayega

English Translation:

Do not allow yourself to go out of sight, or else you will slip from the heart;

As for time, it is bound to pass and it will inevitably slip away.

Urdu:

اس سے پہلے کہ بے وفا ہو جائیں

کیوں نہ اے دوست ہم جدا ہو جائیں

Roman Urdu:

Is se pehle ke be-wafa ho jaayein

Kyun na ae dost hum juda ho jaayein

English Translation:

Before either of us turns unfaithful to the other,

Why shouldn’t we, my dear friend, part ways right now?

Urdu:

روگ ایسے بھی غمِ یار سے لگ جاتے ہیں

در سے اٹھتے ہیں تو دیوار سے لگ جاتے ہیں

Roman Urdu:

Rog aise bhi gham-e-yaar se lag jaate hain

Dar se uthte hain to deewar se lag jaate hain

English Translation:

Such afflictions are contracted from the sorrow of the beloved

That when people rise from the doorway, they collapse helplessly against the wall.

Urdu:

چپ چاپ اپنی آگ میں جلتے رہو فرازؔ

دنیا تو عرضِ حال سے بے آبرو کرے

Roman Urdu:

Chup chaap apni aag mein jalte rahoo Faraz

Duniya to arz-e-haal se be-aabroo kare

English Translation:

Keep burning silently within your own internal fire, O Faraz;

For the world will only humiliate you if you express your plight.

Urdu:

کرو کج جبیں پہ سرِ کفن مرے قاتلوں کو گماں نہ ہو

کہ غرورِ عشق کا بانکپن پسِ مرگ ہم نے بھلا دیا

Roman Urdu:

Karo kaj jabeen pe sar-e-kafan mere qaatiloon ko gumaan na ho

Ke ghuroor-e-ishq ka baankpan pas-e-marg hum ne bhula diya

English Translation:

Tilt the shroud slightly over my forehead so my killers do not assume

That I have forgotten the elegant pride of love even after my death.

Urdu:

جدائیاں تو مقدر ہیں پھر بھی جانِ سفر

کچھ اور دور ذرا ساتھ چل کے دیکھتے ہیں

Roman Urdu:

Judaiyan to muqaddar hain phir bhi jaan-e-safar

Kuch aur door zara saath chal ke dekhte hain

English Translation:

Separations are ultimately our destiny, yet O companion of the journey,

Let us walk together just a little further and see what happens.

Urdu:

شوقِ ترا اگر نہ رہے تو کچھ بھی نہیں

دنیا کی رونقیں بھی پھر اچھی نہیں لگتیں

Roman Urdu:

Shauq tera agar na rahe to kuch bhi nahin

Duniya ki raunaqein bhi phir acchhi nahin lagteen

English Translation:

If the intense passion for you ceases to exist, then nothing remains;

Even the grand festivities of the world fail to please the heart after that.

Urdu:

ایسا ہے کہ سب خواب مسلسل نہیں ہوتے

جو آج تو ہوتے ہیں مگر کل نہیں ہوتے

Roman Urdu:

Aisa hai ke sab khwab musalsal nahin hote

Jo aaj to hote hain magar kal nahin hote

English Translation:

The reality is that not all dreams are continuous;

Some exist vividly today but vanish completely by tomorrow.

مرزا غالب (Mirza Ghalib)

Urdu:

یہ نہ تھی ہماری قسمت کہ وصالِ یار ہوتا

اگر اور جیتے رہتے یہی انتظار ہوتا

Roman Urdu:

Yeh na thi hamari qismat ke wisaal-e-yaar hota

Agar aur jeete rehte yehi intezar hota

English Translation:

It was not in my destiny to unite with my beloved;

Had I lived any longer, it would have been the exact same wait.

Urdu:

دل ہی تو ہے نہ سنگ و خشت، درد سے بھر نہ آئے کیوں

روئیں گے ہم ہزار بار، کوئی ہمیں ستائے کیوں

Roman Urdu:

Dil hi to hai na sang-o-khisht, درد سے بھر نہ آئے کیوں

Roein ge hum hazaar baar, koi hamein sataye kyun

English Translation:

It is only a heart, not stone or brick, why shouldn’t it fill with pain?

I will weep a thousand times, why should anyone torment me?

Urdu:

دردِ دل لکھوں کب تک، جاؤں ان کو دکھلاؤں

انگلیاں فگار اپنی، خامہ خوں چکاں اپنا

Roman Urdu:

Dard-e-dil likhoon kab tak, jaoon un ko dikhlaoon

Ungliyan figaar apni, khaama khoon chakaan apna

English Translation:

How long should I write about my heartbreak? Let me go and show them

My wounded fingers and my pen that drips with blood.

Urdu:

محبت میں نہیں ہے فرق جینے اور مرنے کا

اسی کو دیکھ کر جیتے ہیں جس کافر پہ دم نکلے

Roman Urdu:

Mohabbat mein nahin hai farq jeene aur marne ka

Usi ko dekh kar jiete hain jis kaafir pe dam nikle

English Translation:

There is no difference between living and dying in love;

I live by looking at the very beloved for whom my breath departs.

Urdu:

عشق پر زور نہیں، ہے یہ وہ آتش غالبؔ

کہ لگائے نہ لگے اور بجھائے نہ بجھے

Roman Urdu:

Ishq par zor nahin, hai yeh woh aatish Ghalib

Ke lagaye na lage aur bujhaye na bujhe

English Translation:

Love cannot be forced, O Ghalib, it is that kind of fire

Which cannot be lit intentionally and cannot be extinguished when it burns.

Urdu:

رگوں میں دوڑتے پھرنے کے ہم نہیں قائل

جب آنکھ ہی سے نہ ٹپکا تو پھر لہو کیا ہے

Roman Urdu:

Ragoon mein daurte phirne ke hum نہیں قائل

Jab aankh hi se na tapka to phir lahoo kya hai

English Translation:

I am not convinced by the blood that merely runs hidden within the veins;

If it has not spilled out through the eye as a tear, then what worth is it as blood?

Urdu:

ہوئی تاخیر تو کچھ باعثِ تاخیر بھی تھا

آپ آتے تھے مگر کوئی عناد آتا تھا

Roman Urdu:

Hui takheer to kuch baais-e-takheer bhi تھا

Aap aate the magar koi anaad aata tha

English Translation:

If there was a delay, there was surely a reason for that delay;

You intended to come, but some obstacle stood in the way.

Urdu:

غمِ ہستی کا اسدؔ کس سے ہو جز مرگ علاج

شمعِ ہر رنگ میں جلتی ہے سحر ہونے تک

Roman Urdu:

Gham-e-hasti ka Asad kis se ho juz marg ilaaj

Shama har rang mein jalti hai sehar hone tak

English Translation:

What cure is there for the sorrow of existence, O Asad, except death?

The candle must burn in every hue until the dawn arrives.

Urdu:

نہ تھا کچھ تو خدا تھا، کچھ نہ ہوتا تو خدا ہوتا

ڈبویا مجھ کو ہونے نے، نہ ہوتا میں تو کیا ہوتا

Roman Urdu:

Na tha kuch to khuda tha, kuch na hota to khuda hota

Duboya mujh ko hone ne, na hota mein to kya hota

English Translation:

When nothing existed, God was there; if nothing were to exist, God would remain;

My very existence has ruined me; had I not existed, what difference would it have made?
