Roman Urdu:
Aankh ki tasveer sar-name pe kheenchi hai ke taa
Tujh pe khul jaave ke is ko hasrat-e-deedar hai

English Translation:
I drew the image of an eye on the letter’s heading,
So you may understand that it longs to see you.

Urdu:
رگوں میں دوڑتے پھرنے کے ہم نہیں قائل
جب آنکھ ہی سے نہ ٹپکا تو پھر لہو کیا ہے

Roman Urdu:
Ragon mein daurte phirne ke hum nahin qail
Jab aankh hi se na tapka to phir lahu kya hai

English Translation:
I do not believe blood is only what runs through veins.
If it does not fall from the eyes, then what kind of blood is it?

بہت دنوں میں تغافل نے تیرے پیدا کی
وہ اک نگاہ کہ بظاہر نگاہ سے کم ہے

Bohat dinon mein taghaful ne tere paida ki

پھر مجھے دیدۂ تر یاد آیا
دل جگر تشنۂ فریاد آیا

Phir mujhe dida-e-tar yaad aaya
Dil jigar tishna-e-fariyaad aaya

Urdu:
ناکامیِ نگاہ ہے برقِ نظارہ سوز

میرؔ اُن نیم باز آنکھوں میں

Mir, in those half-open eyes,

Urdu:
چشم ہو تو آئینہ خانہ ہے دہر

کاسۂ چشم لے کے جوں نرگس
ہم نے دیدار کی گدائی کی

Kasa-e-chashm le ke joon nargis
Hum ne deedar ki gadaai ki

Like the narcissus, holding the bowl of the eye,
I begged only for a glimpse of the beloved.

Urdu:
کیا جانوں چشمِ تر سے ادھر دل کو کیا ہوا
کس کو خبر ہے میرؔ سمندر کے پار کی

Kya jaanun chashm-e-tar se udhar dil ko kya hua
Kis ko khabar hai Mir samundar ke paar ki

English Translation:

خراب رہتے تھے مسجد کے آگے مے خانے
نگاہِ مست نے ساقی کی انتقام لیا

Kharab rehte the masjid ke aage mai-khane
Nigah-e-mast ne saaqi ki intiqam liya

The taverns once lay ruined before the mosque.

ٹھہرا گیا نہ ہو کہ حریف اُس کی چشم کا

Faqeeron ka bhi aakhir haal kya se kya bana daala

Her intoxicating glance ruined the whole monastery.

Tan ke maamure mein yahi dil-o-chashm

Urdu:
آنکھ جو کچھ دیکھتی ہے لب پہ آ سکتا نہیں
محوِ حیرت ہوں کہ دنیا کیا سے کیا ہو جائے گی

Aankh jo kuch dekhti hai lab pe aa sakta nahin
Mahv-e-hairat hun ke duniya kya se kya ho jaegi

English Translation:
What the eye sees cannot fully come to the lips.
I am lost in wonder at what the world may become.

Urdu:
ظاہر کی آنکھ سے نہ تماشا کرے کوئی
ہو دیکھنا تو دیدۂ دل وا کرے کوئی

Roman Urdu:
Zahir ki aankh se na tamasha kare koi
Ho dekhna to dida-e-dil wa kare koi

English Translation:
One should not watch the world only with the outer eye.

In my eyes, he is not truly a lover of wine, O cupbearer,
If he separates awareness from intoxication.

ہزاروں سال نرگس اپنی بے نوری پہ روتی ہے
بڑی مشکل سے ہوتا ہے چمن میں دیدہ ور پیدا

Roman Urdu:
Hazaron saal nargis apni be-noori pe roti hai
Bari mushkil se hota hai chaman mein dida-war paida

English Translation:
For thousands of years, the narcissus weeps over its blindness.
Only with great difficulty is a true visionary born in the garden.

Urdu:
حیا نہیں ہے زمانے کی آنکھ میں باقی
خدا کرے کہ جوانی تری رہے بے داغ

Roman Urdu:
Haya nahin hai zamane ki aankh mein baaqi
Khuda kare ke jawani teri rahe be-daagh

Modesty no longer remains in the eye of the world.
May God keep your youth pure and spotless.

Urdu:
نگاہِ عشق دلِ زندہ کی تلاش میں ہے
شکارِ مردہ سزاوارِ شاہباز نہیں

Roman Urdu:
Nigah-e-ishq dil-e-zinda ki talash mein hai
Shikar-e-murda saza-war-e-shahbaz nahin

English Translation:
The eye of love searches for a living heart.
A dead prey does not suit the royal falcon.

Urdu:
ملے گا منزلِ مقصود کا اسی کو سراغ
اندھیری شب میں ہے چیتے کی آنکھ جس کا چراغ

Roman Urdu:
Milega manzil-e-maqsood ka usi ko suraagh
Andheri shab mein hai cheete ki aankh jis ka charagh

English Translation:
Only that person will find the path to the goal
Whose lamp in the dark night is like the eye of a leopard.

سو سو امیدیں بندھتی ہیں اک اک نگاہ پر
مجھ کو نہ ایسے پیار سے دیکھا کرے کوئی

Sau sau umeedein bandhti hain ek ek nigah par
Mujh ko na aise pyaar se dekha kare koi

Hundreds of hopes attach themselves to every glance.

ہو دید کا جو شوق تو آنکھوں کو بند کر
ہے دیکھنا یہی کہ نہ دیکھا کرے کوئی

Ho deed ka jo shauq to aankhon ko band kar
Hai dekhna yahi ke na dekha kare koi

English Translation:
If you desire true vision, close your eyes.
True seeing is to see without looking.

Urdu:
زباں میں آنکھ نہیں، آنکھ میں زبان نہیں
ترے جمال کی تصویر کھینچ دوں لیکن

Roman Urdu:
Zabaan mein aankh nahin, aankh mein zabaan nahin
Tere jamaal ki tasveer kheench doon lekin

English Translation:
The tongue has no eye, and the eye has no tongue.
Otherwise, I would paint the image of your beauty.

Urdu:
حسیں تری آنکھیں، حسیں ترے آنسو
یہیں ڈوب جانے کو جی چاہتا ہے

Roman Urdu:
Haseen teri aankhen, haseen tere aansu
Yahin doob jaane ko ji chahta hai

English Translation:
Beautiful are your eyes, and beautiful are your tears.
My heart wishes to drown right here.

Urdu:
کبھی اُن مد بھری آنکھوں سے پیا تھا اک جام
آج تک ہوش نہیں، ہوش نہیں، ہوش نہیں

Roman Urdu:
Kabhi un mad-bhari aankhon se piya tha ek jaam
Aaj tak hosh nahin, hosh nahin, hosh nahin

English Translation:
Once I drank from those intoxicated eyes.
To this day, I have not returned to my senses.

Urdu:
آنکھوں کا تھا قصور نہ دل کا قصور تھا
آنا ہی تھا جو عشق تو آنا ضرور تھا

Roman Urdu:
Aankhon ka tha qusoor na dil ka qusoor tha
Aana hi tha jo ishq to aana zaroor tha

English Translation:
It was neither the fault of the eyes nor the fault of the heart.
Love had to come, so it came.

Urdu:
ملتے ہی آنکھ شیشۂ دل چور چور تھا
ایسا کہاں بہار میں رنگینیوں کا جوش

Roman Urdu:
Milte hi aankh sheesha-e-dil choor choor tha
Aisa kahan bahaar mein rangeeniyon ka josh

English Translation:
As soon as the eyes met, the glass of the heart shattered.
Even spring does not carry such a rush of color.

Urdu:
ساقی کی چشمِ مست کا کیا کیجیے بیاں
اتنا سرور تھا کہ مجھے بھی سرور تھا

Roman Urdu:
Saqi ki chashm-e-mast ka kya kijiye bayaan
Itna suroor tha ke mujhe bhi suroor tha

English Translation:
How can one describe the cupbearer’s intoxicating eyes?
There was such ecstasy that I too became intoxicated.

Urdu:
اُس چشمِ مے فروش سے کوئی نہ بچ سکا
سب کو بقدرِ حوصلۂ دل سرور تھا

Roman Urdu:
Us chashm-e-mai-farosh se koi na bach saka
Sab ko ba-qadr-e-hausla-e-dil suroor tha

English Translation:
No one could escape those wine-selling eyes.
Everyone received intoxication according to the strength of their heart.

Urdu:
کوئی بڑھے نہ بڑھے ہم تو جان دیتے ہیں
پھر ایسی چشمِ توجہ ہوئی، ہوئی نہ ہوئی

Roman Urdu:
Koi barhe na barhe hum to jaan dete hain
Phir aisi chashm-e-tawajjoh hui, hui na hui

English Translation:
Whether anyone steps forward or not, I would give my life.
Who knows if such a glance of attention will ever come again?

Urdu:
تری نگاہِ کرم کو بھی آزما دیکھا
اذیتوں میں نہ ہونی تھی کچھ کمی نہ ہوئی

Roman Urdu:
Teri nigah-e-karam ko bhi aazma dekha
Aziyyaton mein na honi thi kuchh kami na hui

English Translation:
I even tested your merciful glance.
Still, there was no shortage in my suffering.

Urdu:
اٹھتی نہیں ہے آنکھ مگر اُس کے روبرو
نادیدہ اک نگاہ کیے جا رہا ہوں میں

Roman Urdu:
Uthti nahin hai aankh magar us ke roo-ba-roo
Na-deeda ek nigah kiye ja raha hoon main

English Translation:
My eyes do not rise before her,
Yet unseen, I keep casting a glance.

Urdu:
سمندر میں اترتا ہوں تو آنکھیں بھیگ جاتی ہیں
کسی کو یاد کرتا ہوں تو آنکھیں بھیگ جاتی ہیں

Roman Urdu:
Samundar mein utarta hoon to aankhen bheeg jati hain
Kisi ko yaad karta hoon to aankhen bheeg jati hain

English Translation:
When I step into the sea, my eyes become wet.
When I remember someone, my eyes become wet.

Urdu:
آنکھوں سے مری اس لیے لالی نہیں جاتی
یادوں سے کوئی رات جو خالی نہیں جاتی

Roman Urdu:
Aankhon se meri is liye laali nahin jati
Yaadon se koi raat jo khaali nahin jati

English Translation:
The redness does not leave my eyes for this reason:
No night passes empty of memories.

Urdu:
اس کی آنکھوں میں محبت کا ستارہ ہوگا
ایک دن آئے گا وہ شخص ہمارا ہوگا

Us ki aankhon mein mohabbat ka sitara hoga
Ek din aayega woh shakhs hamara hoga

رکی ہوئی ہے ابھی تک بہار آنکھوں میں

شبِ وصال کا جیسے خمار آنکھوں میں

Ruki hui hai abhi tak bahaar aankhon mein
Ahabe wasal ka jesy humar ankho main

The spring still lingers softly in my eyes, 

Like the sweet hangover of the night of union in my eyes. 

Urdu:
یہ غربتیں مری آنکھوں میں کیسے اتری ہیں
کہ خواب بھی مرے رخصت ہیں، رتجگا بھی گیا

Roman Urdu:
Yeh ghurbatein meri aankhon mein kaise utri hain
Ke khwab bhi mere rukhsat hain, ratjaga bhi gaya

English Translation:
What loneliness has descended into my eyes?
My dreams have left, and even my sleeplessness is gone.

Urdu:
گلاب ہاتھ میں ہو، آنکھ میں ستارہ ہو
کوئی تو ہو جو مرے دکھ کا حصہ دار ہو

Gulab haath mein ho, aankh mein sitara ho
Koi to ho jo mere dukh ka hissa-daar ho

English Translation:
There should be a rose in the hand and a star in the eye.
There should be someone who shares my sorrow.

مٹا سکے گی اسے گردِ ماہ و سال کہاں
کھنچی ہوئی ہے جو تصویرِ یار آنکھوں میں

Roman Urdu:
Mita sake gi ise gard-e-maah-o-saal kahan
Khinchi hui hai jo tasveer-e-yaar aankhon mein

English Translation:
How can the dust of passing months and years erase it,
When the beloved’s image is drawn inside the eyes?

Urdu:
تُو بدلتا ہے تو بے ساختہ میری آنکھیں
اپنے ہاتھوں کی لکیروں سے اُلجھ جاتی ہیں

Roman Urdu:
Tu badalta hai to be-sakhta meri aankhen
Apne haathon ki lakeeron se ulajh jati hain

English Translation:
When you change, my eyes helplessly
Get tangled in the lines of my own hands.

Urdu:
اک شب کی مسافت تھی اور اب تک ہے
مہ و نجوم کا سارا غبار آنکھوں میں

Roman Urdu:
Ek shab ki musafat thi aur ab tak hai
Mah-o-nujoom ka saara ghubaar aankhon mein

English Translation:
It was only the journey of one night, yet even now
The dust of the moon and stars remains in the eyes.

Urdu:
لو میں آنکھیں بند کیے لیتی ہوں، اب تم رخصت ہو
دل تو جانے کیا کہتا ہے، لیکن دل کا کہنا کیا

Lo main aankhen band kiye leti hoon, ab tum rukhsat ho
